Poet, prose writer, essayist, and professor of Spanish Literature at the University of Granada; since 2018, he has been the director of the Cervantes Institute. Born in Granada in 1958. He made his poetic debut in 1980 and has since developed a prolific career with works such as El jardín extranjero (Adonáis Prize, 1982), Habitaciones separadas (Loewe Prize, 1993; National Poetry Prize, 1994), and La intimidad de la serpiente (National Critics' Prize, 2003). Part of his work has been published in Mexico by Valparaíso México and Visor Libros México, including Almudena (2014) and Lecciones de poesía para niños y niñas inquietos (2017). He has received numerous international awards, including the Ramón López Velarde Prize (Mexico, 2017), the Parallel 0 Prize (Ecuador), and the Carlos Fuentes International Prize for Literary Creation in Spanish, awarded by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
