Poet, prose writer, and translator. Born in 1913 in Luino. In 1933, he moved to Milan, where he enrolled in the university's law faculty, later switching to philology. From 1937, together with Alberto Lattuada, he was on the editorial board of the journal Corrente, and collaborated with the journals Letteratura and Campo di Marte. His debut collection, Frontiera (The Border), was published in 1941. That same year, he was drafted into the army; from 1943 to 1945, he was held in prisoner-of-war camps in Algeria and Morocco. His second book of poetry, Diario d'Algeria (Algerian Diary), was published in 1947 in Florence. From 1958 to 1975, he served as literary director of the major Italian publishing house Mondadori. He also published the journal Questo e altro. During his lifetime, his collection Gli strumenti umani (1965) and many other poetry books were also published. He died in 1983 in Milan.
