Poet, filmmaker, painter, and translator, one of the key figures in modern Persian poetry. Born in 1935 in Tehran into a colonel's family. At 17, she married and gave birth to a son a year later. In 1954, she divorced, losing custody of her child, and returned to Tehran to pursue poetry and cinema. Her first collection, The Captive (1955), caused a scandal in conservative Iranian society: Farrokhzad's poetry was seen as a challenge to patriarchal norms. Her subsequent books — The Wall (1956) and The Rebellion (1958) — solidified her reputation. The collection Another Birth (1963) marked a turning point and brought her international recognition. Around the same time, she directed the short documentary The House Is Black about a leprosarium in Tabriz, which won a Grand Prix at the Oberhausen Film Festival. Forugh Farrokhzad died in a car accident in 1967.
